An evening with Chorleywood u3a

Location

Chorleywood Community Library, Lower Road, Chorleywood, WD3 5LB

Event description

To celebrate the publication of CHORLEYWOOD AT WAR, we will be hosting a special evening with the Chorleywood u3a, where we’ll hear the fascinating stories of how WWII changed and shaped everyday life in the village.

Drawing on newly discovered materials, contemporary local newspapers and personal testimonies and archives, CHORLEYWOOD AT WAR captures the resilience of a community living through extraordinary times.

Less than 25 miles from central London, Chorleywood was still a semi-rural community, with a focus on farming. Although never on the front line, Chorleywood’s pastoral sleepiness was severely disrupted by the coming of a war.

From the preparations for war, the arrival of evacuees, troops and POWs, to the vital work of local volunteers, this is the story of how our community faced the war years with resilience, determination and with the great strength of purpose we still see today!
